End of Year Awards

We have 4 awards this year and you can win each of them in the following way:

  1. Ragged Aces 2007 Championship Trophy!
2007 Champion's TrophyOnly one way to win this one, earn a seat to the championship tournament on July 7th.  How do you do this?  By playing in games during the season you earn points toward chips in the championship.  The more points you earn, the more chips.  Nobody plays with less than half the starting chips of the first place finisher.  If you are in the top 24 when the championship game arrives, you are invited to attend.  Once you arrive, there is a $20 entry fee and then you may fight it out to win your portion of a prize pool that is already seeded with $240 (money held over from regular season games).  Alternates will be taken from 25th place on down if someone from the top 24 can't make the game.
The winner of this tournament is the Ragged Aces Champion and get's the RACT.
  2. Ragged Aces 2007 Player of the Year Award!
2007 Player of the Year TrophyThe PoYA goes to the player that finishes the season at the top of the leader board.  The leader board is organized by accumulated points with the best Average used as a tie breaker.  How do you accumulate points?  Play in tournaments.  Only your best 10 games are counted so any games played over 10 allow you to bump lower point scoring games with higher games.  A cap on games that count closes the gap between players that play 10+ games and those that play 10-.  Your accumulated points and the average place bonus are also used to calculate your chip count for the championship game.  You can see where you stand on this race from the Standings Page.
  3. Ragged Aces 2007 Bounty Hunter of the Year Award!Bounty Hunter Award
New this year, the RABHoY will be earned by the player that scores the most bounty points during the season.  Bounty points are earned for each player knocked out of a tournament.  Players knocked out of bigger tournaments are worth more points.  Only bounties from tournaments counted toward your championship totals count toward your bounty points (your 10 best point scoring games).  The bounty points are listed on the Standings Page and the lead for this trophy has changed with practically every game so I believe it will be a race right to the end.
Bounty leaders as of the close of Game 13:
      1. Terry (935)
      2. Abi (860)
      3. Mike B. (690)
      4. Darin (640)
      5. Clark (580)
  4. Ragged Aces 2007 Most Improved Player Award!
Most ImprovedAnother new trophy for this year, the RAMIPA will be awarded to the player that has improved most over last season.  Determining the player with the most improvement is not an easy task, so I've resorted to mathematics (don't cry Darin!).
To determine the most improvement I'm using a combination of four stats:
    1. Placement in the standings Year/Year (Last year minus this year) x3 +
    2. Average tournament exit Year/Year (Last year minus this year) x4 +
    3. Points accumulated Year/Year (This year minus last year) divided by games played this year -
    4. Difference in games played Year/Year (This year minus last year) x3
    5. Divide the whole thing by 10
The current leaders of Most Improved Player and the points derived from the formula are:
  1. Casey (3.18)
  2. Darin (2.50)
  3. James (2.46)
  4. Rob (1.34)
  5. Terry (1.08)

Let me know if you have any questions....

-------------------------------------------- * Edit 4/17/2007

After further thought and conversations with a couple of other members of the group I've made a slight change to the Most Improved Player calculations.

It was felt that winning a chip (top three places) in a tournament is pretty tough and should be added to the calculation as a year over year improvement mark.  This gives more points to players that have increased the number (or value) of top three places in tournaments this year.  I'm giving each first place finish 6 point, 2nd place gets 4, and 3rd gets 2.  The new calculation total looks like this:

((('06 standing - '07 standing) x 3)
+ (('06 Ave - '07 Ave) x 4)
+ (('07 points - '06 points) / '07 games)
+ ((('07 black chips x 6) + ('07 green chips x 4) + ('07 red chips x 2)) - (('06 black chips x 6) + ('06 green chips x 4) + ('06 red chips x 2)))
- (('07 games - '06 games) x 3))
/ 10

Leader board after adding in the YoY chip stat:

    1. Darin (4.10)
    2. Casey (3.18)
    3. James (3.06)
    4. Terry (2.28)
    5. Sue (1.29)

Finally, since Most Improved Player has a very subjective component that has some validitiy to it.  Everyone that participates in the championship game will have an opportunity to vote for the player they felt was the most improved.  The nominees will be the top three from this leader board with the player getting the most votes during the championship getting the trophy.

hmmm...i don't know if i like the elimination of voting on all these...it was a lot of fun last year to vote.

and as far as the most improved standings...i still think a lot of weight needs to be put on how many games a person plays. the "equation" currently has Casey in first place, but he played in 1 game according to the 2006 standings and 4 games in 2007--I've played in well over 20. i never won anything in 2006 and have 4 victories this year. Casey has 1 victory in 2005, and none since--something seems amiss saying he is more improved than me....i'm just saying (and no offense to Casey!)

I've been putting some thought into this as well and think there is a piece to the math that needs to include top 3 finishes YoY.  I'll work on it tonight and see how it looks...

As for voting, I agree that it was fun and interesting and I think it would work great for the very subjective category of Most Improved Player so I'm thinking we take the top three players derived from the algorithm and everyone vote for the player they feel has improved the most at the championship game.

The other awards are more straight forward and I think the player that accumulates the primary points for those awards should get them as outlined above.

I'll post again after putting together the top three math tonight...
